by

Welcome to the Week 6 of Web 2.0: Introduction to Second Generation Web Tools.

Topic Introduction:
Online photo sharing allows people to upload digital photos and share with them with others. Most services allow tagging and organizing of online photos. Photo sharing sites have many different payment and copyright retention models. There are free and fee-for-services sites. On some photo sharing sites you can attach copyright permissions or a Creative Commons license to your photos for distribution. One of the most well known sites is flickr

Discovery Readings:

  1. Read the Wikipedia entry on online photo sharing.
  2. List of photo sharing websites on Wikipedia (comparison chart and links).
  3. Review the Creative Commons page on flickr to understand the various distribution options allowed through photo sharing online.

OPTIONAL Readings if you want to explore more:

  1. The History of Creative Commons
  2. Before Licensing explains Creative Commons and some copyright issues in more detail.
  3. Library of Congress blog on their use of Flickr.

Discovery Exercises:

Step 1: Set up an online photosharing account. We might suggest using flickr, but there are several others listed in the Wikipedia reading from which you may choose.

Step 2: Upload one or more digital photos using flickr or any other image sharing service.

Step 3: Post the photo(s) on to your Facebook site and your blog. You can add these photos to your Facebook page through the photos section or through adding one of the many flickr applications.
